The Colosseum

The Romans built the Colosseum in 80 AD to act as their center of entertainment. 50,000 people could easily fit in it. In times of ancient Rome, crowds would gather in the Colosseum to watch as gladiators fought each other on the field. Additionally, there would be public executions in the amphitheater. The Pantheon

In the heart of Rome is a beautiful structure. Eight solid concrete columns stand at the front of this structure. At the top is the largest unsupported concrete dome in existence. Inside the building are columns and corridors making up one of the world’s architectural marvels. Therefore, if an appreciation for such craft is your thing, you should visit the Pantheon the next time you’re in Rome. The Pantheon is rumored to have been built to serve as a temple. In the seventh century, the Roman Catholics took over the Pantheon. Today, the Pantheon is open to the public, hosting several itineraries per day due to increased demand.

St Peter’s Basilica

Rome is the heart of the Roman Catholic Church. As such, one of the must-see places in the area is the head of the Catholic Church, the Basilica of the St. Peter. The St. Peter Basilica marks the site where the Apostle Peter was crucified and eventually buried. This makes the greatest attraction of St. Peter’s Basilica its religious importance. A close second is the significance of the Basilica to the artistic world. After its completion in 1615, St. Peter’s Basilica hosted several great artists. The most notable of them was Michelangelo, whose paintings brings tourists to the Basilica to date.

Vatican Museum

The Vatican Museum is the home to many religious relics in Rome. The museum began as a collection of a few statues and over time became the house to many national relics. Those relics include the spiral staircase and the Sistine Chapel. The Sistine Chapel is one of the more popular features of the Museum, with Michelangelo’s Last Judgement painting drawing crowds annually.

The Trevi Fountain

If you want to enjoy Romes top attractions you have to stop by the Trevi Fountain. To get to the fountain, you have to take one of three roads that join at the location of the fountain, hence the name (tre vie). There’s a legend that if you drop a coin into the fountain, you’ll eventually come back to Rome. Three statues make up this fountain. One on Neptune and two of Tritons. These statues are a sight to behold.
